Manuscript report
A book-level view of chapter lengths, pace, and craft, rolled up from every document.
The Manuscript report rolls the numbers your documents already carry up to the whole book, so you can see how your chapters compare without opening each one. It costs nothing to run and never changes your writing — it observes, it does not grade.
Where to find it
Open a project and choose Report in the sidebar. It reads every active document in binder order and updates whenever you write.
It reads in your project’s terms
The same figures roll up for a novel, a nonfiction book, a short-fiction collection or a memoir — the report just names the unit the way you do: chapters for a novel or memoir, sections for a nonfiction book, stories for a short-fiction collection. The prose-fiction sections below — POV / tense drift, the tension arc and the cast — appear where they apply and are left out where they do not, so a nonfiction report is not novel-shaped.
What it shows
- Headline figures — total words, chapter count, mean chapter length, and an estimated read time for the whole book.
- Chapter length strip — one bar per chapter with the book average drawn across, so an outlier chapter stands out at a glance.
- Pace band — dialogue against narrative for each chapter, to see where the talking thins out.
- Craft table — per chapter: sentence length and variety, passive voice, vocabulary diversity, declared and measured POV with their agreement, and tense with its consistency. Sort by any column; chapters far from the book average are marked with an asterisk — noted, never scored.
- POV / tense drift — where a scene card declares a POV, Oghmere reads the prose and shows whether it reads as declared. A drift row highlights any scene that reads as a different POV than its card, or that holds its POV or tense below 85% consistency — noted as a choice worth a second look, never as an error. A deliberate POV break is a craft choice; a scene with no scene-card POV reads “not declared”, not drift.
- Cast — each character and the scenes it appears in, in binder order, with its scene count, first and last appearance, and the longest run of scenes it is absent for between two appearances — so a POV character who vanishes for many chapters stands out. Built from the entities your documents mention; a character with none yet is shown as such, not as appearing in zero scenes.
- Export CSV — download the craft table exactly as shown, declared and measured POV included. The numbers are yours.
